How long have you been a Ham?
Since December 27, 2024
What mode(s) within Amateur Radio do you enjoy operating?
I want to get really good at using Morse code. Now that I have earned my extra license, my focus has shifted to getting better at it. I would also like to improve my voice while operating POTA.
Describe your involvement with GSARA.
Well, I started just hanging out with my husband when he went on his HAM radio adventures. I used to bring my crafts and work on them when he was operating. I got to thinking... hey, that looks like fun, making contacts all over the USA and around the world, and also watching him and others, so I decided to go for it and get my license too. I managed to earn my Technician, General, and then my EXTRA in about 10 months. Now that I got that taken care of... It's time to learn more hands-on stuff without worrying about where I am on the bands. Yay, let the fun continue! I have also become a member of ARES and participate in the training practices that they offer to prepare for emergencies.
What is one piece of advice you would give a new Ham?
If you are interested in this hobby, it has a lot to offer. There are many different activities, and the learning is endless. I would also recommend that if you are a female, this hobby can be fun for you, too. I love working with my husband and going on many different activities, whether it's POTA, Field Days, Nets, Nearfest, or 4-H events to teach kids about the hobby. I know that there aren't as many women in this hobby as men, but honestly this has been a lot of fun for Tim and I to grow as a husband and wife team in HAM radio... TEAM CATES!!!
