227 days

Describe your involvement with GSARA.

My brother-in-law Shawn, who lives in Pennsylvania, has been a HAM operator for a very long time. He showed me the hobby, and I just fell in love. He told me to find a local HAM club and study. So, I emailed GSARA, and Ralph replied and invited me to the club’s breakfast on Wednesday mornings at Pressed Cafe in Bedford. I agreed, and when I walked into the press for the first time, it felt like I was a kid starting at a new school. That day, I met so many wonderful people who were willing to share their HAM stories, encouraged me to get my license, and even helped me study. It hasn't even been a year, but I've already made some really cool friends through this club.

What is one piece of advice you would give a new Ham?

The one piece of advice I would give is don't be intimidated because HAMS are always learning and discovering.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I would like to share my why for HAM radio. For me, it is about community, connection, and purpose. I struggled for a really long time to find my why. I believe everyone has or is still looking for their why, and HAM radio is that vessel for me. My job is talking to Veterans every day, and as a Veteran myself, I had community, connection, and purpose when we served. We didn't have to find it. It was already designed that way. When I got home, all those things were gone, and I didn't know how to find them. Until I became a member of this club. I also believe Veterans and anyone in general who is also looking for a community, connection, and purpose can find it. That is my why.
