Joe Labbe (N1PRG)
How long have you been a Ham?
I was first licensed in 1993 and have kept the same call sign since then.
What mode(s) within Amateur Radio do you enjoy operating?
While CW was a required element when I first tested, I'm almost ashamed to admit I never pursued it afterward. (My General class upgrade in 2001) So CW is one of those modes that I REALLY need to commit to in the near future. Naturally, an upgrade to Extra class is a short-term goal as well. The greatest satisfaction I get from the hobby comes from antenna design and building, weak-signal contacts, and "fox hunting".
Describe your involvement with GSARA.
Though I have used the N1QC repeater for more than 30 years, I finally committed to membership only a few short years ago. It is, in fact, the club I've always sought to get involved with. Perhaps in the future, I could commit to a higher level of service if an administrative position opens. Today, I genuinely enjoy the camaraderie among all club members and being part of the field day operations.
What is one piece of advice you would give a new Ham?
I'd have to offer a few pieces of advice to the new ham: First, DON'T BE SHY - "Be Brave!" (WM1H) Second, in this hobby, you are limited only by your imagination; finally, listen more than you talk. So much more can be learned from listening and observing what other club members offer.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I owe a debt of gratitude to all club members for including me in their "first-rate club". We truly are blessed to be among friends such as these. What's truly remarkable is a spirit among us of fellowship rather than competition.
