How long have you been a Ham?

I have been a Ham for a little over a year and a half. It was February, and I saw an ad on Facebook for a home study to get a license. I don't do too much in the winter, and since I'm always looking to learn something new, I figured I'd give it a try. My first radio was the ever-popular Baofeng HT. I had no idea what I was doing and set the radio to scan, and one night I heard the GSARA's nightly Net. I would write down callsigns and listen, and could not wait to get my license.
I obtained my Technician License in April of 2024 at 19:00 hrs. I tried to check in, BUT could not get through. By the time I realized I had the wrong tone for the repeater, the Net had ended. Fortunately, I did not have to wait for the next Net. AC1J, Tom, was still on and answered my call. We chatted for a bit, and the rest is history!
I acquired my General's a year later. I am looking forward to getting my Amateur Extra, hopefully this year.

What mode(s) within Amateur Radio do you enjoy operating?

I want to participate in ARES activities, as I find it a really excellent form of civil service when called upon. I will also be signing up as a VE, as I think it would be great to meet new Hams coming into the hobby.

Describe your involvement with GSARA.

My wife and I helped out with cooking duties for the 2024 Summer Field Day. That was a great way to meet the other members and put a face with a callsign.
I am currently the Net Control Operator for the GSARA on Monday nights. I'll admit, I was very nervous the first few times I ran the Net! Fast forward a year, and things are much more relaxed, and I really enjoy running the Net.
This past year, I assisted with parking duty for the Merrimack Valley Military Vehicle Collectors (MVMVC). I am looking forward to more of these and helping out when needed.

What is one piece of advice you would give a new Ham?

My solid piece of advice for anyone is NOT to be shy!! Don't be afraid to key the mic and say hi. This is a great hobby, and everyone is always willing to help out. Whether it's questions or the need for equipment, there is always someone willing to lend a hand. Further to this, don't forget: everyone started somewhere. Don't get discouraged!!

Is there anything else you would like to share?
