Supporting the Pack Monadnock 10 Miler: A Day of Ham Radio and Community Spirit
On Sunday, May 18th, I (Tim/KC1QDK) had the privilege of witnessing firsthand how amateur radio operators, or ARES members, play a vital role in supporting our local community events. That day, Greater Manchester and Greater Nashua ARES group members came together to provide critical communications support for the annual Pack Monadnock 10 Miler road race.
Sixteen dedicated ARES team members volunteered their time and expertise, setting up radio stations and coordinating efforts to ensure the race proceeded smoothly. Their presence was essential for maintaining clear lines of communication across the race course, allowing organizers to address any issues with runners promptly and efficiently.
The event was a resounding success, drawing over 250 runners from the area and beyond. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the ARES volunteers, participants could focus on their race, knowing that help and information were just a radio call away if needed.
This experience reaffirmed the importance of amateur radio in supporting community events, emergency response, and fostering a sense of camaraderie among operators. It’s always rewarding to see how our skills can make a real difference on race day, ensuring safety and smooth operation for everyone involved.
Looking forward to more opportunities to serve and connect through ham radio!
